"Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong." – I Corinthians 1: 26-27

Sensing the Void
Following the dark period of the communist takeover in Vietnam, many Christian churches were eradicated. For the next decade, the compelling presence of God seemed to have vanished from many parts of Vietnam. Yet the Holy Spirit was alive and active among individuals, prodding them to re-ignite the fire of the gospel, spreading God's message afresh through their desolate land.

Sharing Christ
Stories of the Spirit's work in Vietnam abound. One evangelist went into a large village to gather the people and tell them about Christ's message of hope. The response was tepid at best; most villagers ignored his invitation. The disappointed evangelist, trusting God, relayed the gospel to the meager crowd. The looks on their faces betrayed the rejection in their hearts. Finally the evangelist pled with the group asking, "Won't anyone stand for Jesus?"

Of the 20 people there that day, only one person stood up, a 16-year-old boy named Hyun. He was the only one to stand for Jesus that day, but one small person, submitted to God, can demonstrate the mighty power of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Over the next few months, the evangelist discipled Hyun. Hyun soaked in the truth of scriptures, the disciplines of prayer, and the understanding of God's great love for those who need Him.

Demonstrating Power
One day, an old man from the village walked by the hut where Hyun was studying. The man confessed, "I've been ill for many years. I've tried everything that witchcraft and animism has to offer me, and nothing has helped. Can your God heal me?" Hyun responded, "I don't know, but I will pray."

The Lord did heal the old man. Because of God's demonstration of power, the whole village was ready to stand for Jesus. At the age of 18, Hyun became the pastor of the village church with 300 members and within the next two years, all 48 of the surrounding villages were reached for Christ.

Responding with Readiness
We might think we are limited in our abilities to serve God. Perhaps we lack eloquence, or wisdom, or appearance. Hyun was simply willing to stand for Jesus, and he let God lead. He experienced God's presence and participated in God's power. Pray for the Vietnamese church planters. Pray that we will all be ready to obey when God calls.
