God Prompts WorldServe to Explore Needs in CambodiaOver the last several years, WorldServe has increasingly believed that the Lord was leading us to help reach people in the country of Cambodia. We prayed for His direction, waited, and took some small steps to see what God would show us. In late 2003, our Vietnamese ministry partners took an expedition into the country and returned to Vietnam very excited. They had discovered two million unreached Vietnamese people living on boats and houseboats on the rivers and waterways in Cambodia. Two Million People Confined to the Rivers These Vietnamese people fled Vietnam during the war and evaded Pol Pot's bloodbath in Cambodia. Although the escape saved their lives, they became a vilified people for leaving Vietnam. The Cambodians will not give them legal standing in the country and threaten to kill them if they step foot on land. Vietnam will not allow them re-entry, so they live out their isolated lives on the water, stranded between two countries with no place to go. They are extremely poor, uneducated, and in desperate need of the Good News of the Gospel. Early in 2004, a WorldServe team including our Vietnamese partners traveled together into the region. They came away with the absolute conviction that the Lord was calling them to a major new evangelistic and church planting effort among the Vietnamese people on the waterways of Cambodia. Taking God's Word to the Waterways The Challenges: Taking Christ's message to this forgotten group presents some unique challenges that require an adjustment to strategies and resources provided.
The Success: The ministry was launched in 2004 with the opening of our first boat church. |

During the first week, 1,200 adults and children placed their faith in Christ. A total of 13 boat churches have been completed to date. The Future Goal: Anchored in Christ Our prayer is for at least 80 boat churches to be established over the next five years. We are currently assembling teams of pastors and Christian workers who are ready to serve God on the waterways. Some of the needs for this ministry include motorized canoes, Bibles, New Testaments, and evangelistic literature for each church. Children's evangelistic parties will play a large role in this community, and we will also prioritize the training and mobilization of lay leadership. Significant financial resources will be required to underwrite this major evangelistic and church planting effort. You Can Help Please pray for those ministering on the Cambodian waterways-that the Lord would raise up workers and resources needed to reach these people for Christ. Together, we can equip our brothers and sisters with the tools they need for this ministry. Watch a video about Anchored in Christ. Donate $55 USD/$65 CDN to support a pastor of a floating ministry center. |
