"Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed." – Psalm 57:1

God's Work Abounds
When we think of natural disasters, we often focus solely on the widespread destruction, loss of life, and humanitarian crises. We hear stories and see images on television news about families split apart and homes destroyed by storms like Katrina and earthquakes like the one that struck Kobe, Japan in 1995. However, natural disasters also provide an opportunity for God's glory to shine through. Even in the widespread destruction of the tsunamis that struck South and Southeastern Asia in 2005, God was at work laying the foundation for revival in Sri Lanka. Stories abound of God's great work, protecting the faithful and using them, both in their lives and in their tragic deaths, to reach the lost.

A Remarkable Story of Survival
A pastor of the Sri Lankan church reports of the miraculous delivery of two Christian women. On the day of the disaster, they had gone down to the beach to pray, but were interrupted by the rumble of the tremendous wave. They tried to run for higher ground, but could not outpace the wave. Death seemed inevitable, but God's protection extends beyond human comprehension. Out of the jaws of death, both women were lifted to higher ground. Although neither of them could recall how they arrived there—whether they were carried by the wave or by angels—they are praising God for His protection.

His grace truly abounds in the midst of tragedy and His miracles are tremendous tools for reaching the lost.

Peace Through Prayer
Another pastor recounts the story of a Christian man who was working at a lighthouse when he saw the waves coming. The lighthouse workers knew they were exposed and in imminent danger and fled, but the Christian man was determined to complete required safety procedures before escaping.

When he completed his tasks, he ran home to his wife and two children. Time for escape was short and the family knew that reaching safety was unlikely. They knelt together to pray.

A passersby yelled at the family to run, but the little family would not interrupt their prayer. The last neighbor to see the family alive recalls them on their knees, holding hands with their heads bowed. They spent their last minutes on Earth in the presence of Almighty God, and continue to be a witness to God's grace to all who knew them.
