"Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security." – Jeremiah 33:6

A Global Humanitarian Response
On December 26, 2004, the world was shaken by the news that a series of devastating tsunamis had wreaked havoc in coastal communities across South and Southeast Asia, killing an estimated 186,983 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and Myanmar. The global community rushed to the aid of the devastated nations, and provided food, healthcare, temporary housing, and reconstruction assistance. The billions of dollars donated undoubtedly helped prevent further humanitarian crises and averted a rash of diseases, such as cholera, diphtheria, dysentery, and typhoid, but the recovery affected nations is ongoing, and although the immediate physical needs of the citizens are met, there is additional need for emotional and spiritual healing.

Recovery Means More than Just Meeting Physical Needs
Church leaders in Sri Lanka report to WorldServe Ministries that victims of the tsunami who have successfully returned to work have been better able to rebuild their lives and overcome the trauma of the tragedy than those who have not returned to work. Many women in the areas of Sri Lanka affected by the disaster earn a living weaving coir ropes, which are woven from the coarse fiber of the outer husk of coconuts. The coir ropes are woven together to make window coverings and flooring for homes, and is also used to construct beds. Unfortunately, the tsunami destroyed nearly all of the coir rope weaving machines in the area, leaving the women unable to work and continuing to struggle with the trauma of the destruction.

Rebuilding Lives
WorldServe has been blessed to help provide some relief to the stricken communities. Through the generous gifts of partners like you, WorldServe was able to provide victims in ten different communities with a total of 250 coir rope weaving machines.

Because each machine requires three operators, your gifts have provided employment for 750 women! In addition, WorldServe supplied 5 brick-making machines that will make it possible for 40 men to be employed. The bricks the men make will be used for the construction of hundreds of homes that must be rebuilt.

WorldServe believes that by meeting the needs of victims of natural disasters, we are able to demonstrate to non-believers the body of Christ in action. Your donation will help us display mercy in times of crisis and prepare the hearts of unbelievers to hear the Gospel.
