"It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else's foundation." - Romans 15:20 Hope in Adversity Ethiopia is primed and ready for a spiritual revival. During the 17 years of communist rule in Ethiopia most Christian churches were destroyed and the faithful persecuted. When communist rule ended in 1991, a great spiritual vacuum was left. Ethiopian evangelists and church planters are striving to spread the Gospel to a people who have faced decades of poverty and famine, but Christians face great adversity from religious groups, hostile to Christianity. In 2001, WorldServe Ministries began a partnership with the Ethiopian church to enrich the livelihood and enhance the spiritual growth of the Ethiopian people. Ethiopia has been ravaged by drought and famine, leaving this largely agricultural-based economy in great need. The plight of the Ethiopian Christians in this incredibly harsh environment has gone largely unnoticed by much of the world. Challenges for the Ethiopian Church WorldServe's work in Ethiopia brings great hope and a strong foundation for church planters and Christian workers in Ethiopia. Together, there are several challenges we must overcome to effectively bring the Good News to all of Ethiopia. Challenge 1: Religious Opposition There are many people throughout Ethiopia who strongly oppose Christianity, working in every way to impede the spread of the Gospel. The conviction is so strong within many families and communities that when one of their own accepts Christ, they experience great persecution. Challenge 2: Poverty and Famine WorldServe funds Ethiopian churches to bring relief to the hungry and hope to the destitute and persecuted. Our primary focus on church planting, education, and Bible distribution seeks to improve the substandard conditions and glorify God by sharing the hope only found in Jesus Christ. Challenge 3: Training for Leadership WorldServe is committed to sustaining the influx of new believers by equipping and supporting church leadership in Ethiopia. |

Through the Ethiopian church, we provide ongoing Bible training to pastors and church leaders so they can better lead their congregations and prepare them to plant new churches. As leaders and members spread the Gospel to their family, friends, and neighbors, the Church in Ethiopia is growing exponentially. Challenge 4: A Place to Gather While many churches meet in homes, there is a significant need for buildings to house the growing Church. WorldServe supplies materials to complete simple buildings that not only provide places to meet, but that also help establish the Church in a culture that demeans organizations without buildings. Awakening Faith Our 2005 results are as follows - 15,000 Bibles provided, 134 churches planters supported, 250 churches planted, 50,000 Most Important Story booklets distributed, 3,755 new decisions for Christ. The Spirit of God is active in Ethiopia, transforming lives and giving new hope to people in a long-troubled nation. God's Word is transforming lives across this multi-ethnic culture! The revival has begun. Donate $90 USD/$105 CDN to support a church planter for one month. |
