In May of 2007, WorldServe and the American Bible Society teamed up to deliver 200,000 children's Bibles in the country of Cuba the largest shipment ever delivered to Cuba to date! Through the Precious Cargo initiative, our mission is to continue to provide Bibles and scriptures to the Cuban people. This two-year goal includes providing hundreds of thousands of tracts, Bibles, New Testaments, Gospels of John, and Most Important Story booklets and videos for children.Low Supply, Great Demand The need for Bibles is great. During a 2005 trip to Cuba, WorldServe representatives met with the head of one of the largest denominations in the country (representing 244,900 believers). In the previous year alone, they had 25,600 new decisions for Christ! However, they were only able to obtain 96 Bibles for the entire denomination because of the precariously low Scripture supplies. Many Cuban believers who would cherish a personal copy of the scriptures live in such poverty that they clearly cannot afford it. In addition to the burden of cost, Bibles in Cuba are simply unavailable. The Cuban personal income level averages $15 USD per month, so neither the individuals nor the churches have the funds to purchase scriptures. When WorldServe team members travel to Cuba, we meet with pastors. We always ask how well their congregation is supplied with Bibles, and every time, the answer is the same: "We don't have enough." They report that in some cases, only ten to thirty percent of the believers have Bibles. "We are seeing so many new converts coming to Christ that we have no Bibles or New Testaments to give them," shared a church planter in central Cuba. "We have very little discipleship materials to train them. Those would be our areas of greatest need. We are seeing such a hunger for God yet have so little to spiritually feed these converts. Can you help us?" A Mission for WorldServe For Cubans who can afford the purchase and who live in urban regions, the Bible has become more available in recent years. However, the church planters working in rural areas of every region still report extreme shortages. WorldServe has a unique opportunity in this country because we have been given needed permissions to provide large quantities of Scriptures. |

They are imported openly and received and distributed with government authorization. In some areas, as many as 90 percent of church attendees have no Bible of their own. Providing scriptures to these believers is as much a joy for the giver as it is for the receiver as we see them thank God for sending His word into their lives. Since November 2005, WorldServe and its partners have been able to provide Cuban believers with:
