Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?" - Romans 8:35 The Truth Behind China's Renewal China is a magnificent country, rich in history and captivatingly beautiful. But in the latter half of the twentieth century, much of China's magnificence was overshadowed by its communist rule, with the terrors of the Cultural Revolution, the Red Guard, and Tiananmen Square sullying the image of a great nation. Severe Persecution Persists In recent years, the Chinese government has opened its borders and stimulated the economy to new growth and many Westerners assume that religious freedom has followed. This is far from the truth. Chinese believers suffer unimaginable brutality and suffering in the name of Christ. Severe persecution is the stark reality for an estimated 80 million believers in the underground church. Hurdles Remain • Believers meet in secret locations—fields and underground facilities—and daily face discovery, arrest, beatings and prison. • While the underground church is growing and thriving, forced secrecy and tight governmental controls still present an obvious obstacle to the growth of the church. • More scriptures are needed to provide a strong Biblical foundation for believers and the upcoming house church pastors. • Resources to provide foundational Biblical training are essential to bolster the church's foundation in Biblical truth. With the flourishing Church comes a great need for more trained pastors to disciple and teach the new believers. Sustaining Spiritual Growth In spite of the risks, the Gospel continues to spread throughout China at an astounding rate with literally tens of thousands of new decisions for Christ each month.
