"Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." - Psalm 119:105 Worldwide sales of the Bible exceed 100 million every year. If Bible sales were included in the popular best-seller reports, it would be a rare week when the sale of any other book would top the Bible. (British Times newspaper) Chances are high that anyone who has the freedom to read this article also has scripture readily available at all times. So how can one begin to understand vast need for scriptures in restricted areas or the desperation of those who would treasure a Bible as much as their freedom, risking their lives to possess a copy of their own and to share His word with others? Bibles: The Great Need In China: Millions of Chinese believers wait for God to answer their prayers and provide them with a Bible. Countless numbers have copied it by hand. Many have been jailed for transporting scriptures to underground churches. Still others carry in their pockets a single page from a Bible, which is all they own to sustain them spiritually. Chinese believers experience the restricted availability of scriptures because the government prints a limited number of Bibles. Anyone who wants to purchase one must have the necessary funds, travel to an authorized distribution center, (which might require days of travel), and must fill out forms to register the usage of the Bible. This places the person's safety at risk and jeopardizes the security of their fellow believers. WorldServe provides free Bibles for waiting believers without governmental involvement, thereby helping the individual and the church remain under the radar and grow in knowledge and maturity as they are strengthened through the study of God's Word. Reaching Vietnam with God's Word: The government of Vietnam also currently regulates the printing of Bibles, restricting the numbers of Bibles printed to small batches. These Bibles are usually first made available to registered churches, leaving few Bibles for believers in the unregistered churches. There are multitudes of believers who meet in churches who have not been granted official "registered" status, therefore these believers have little or no access to Scriptures. WorldServe to registered and unregistered churches so that God's Word may be readily available. To learn more about providing Bibles for Vietnam, click here. Bibles For Cuba, So Many Without: Many Cuban believers who would cherish a personal copy of the scriptures are still without due to severe poverty and the history of limiting the importatation of Bibles to Cuba. However, currently WorldServe has a unique opportunity in this country because both the Cuban and U.S. governments are currently allowing us to import large numbers of Scriptures and to distribute them to all churches. While the Bible has become more accessible in the urban areas of Cuba, the church planters working in rural areas still report that up to 70 percent or more of the believers still have no Bible of their own. Providing scriptures to these believers is as much a joy for the giver as it is for receiver when we see them thank God for sending His Word into their lives. Since November 2005, WorldServe and its partners have been able to provide Cuban believers with:
We are currently working to provide 200,000 children's Bibles for the country of Cuba. |
