Missions Has Changed
It has become overwhelmingly evident in the past two decades that missions has changed. The world’s political and social situation has so evolved that the role of traditional Western missionaries on foreign soil has been drastically restricted. During the same time, the Spirit of God has caused the greatest spiritual awakening in history. In country after country, God has brought revival and massive church growth. The result has been strong indigenous church planting movements all over the globe, particularly in those areas cut off from significant Western missionary involvement.
The role of the Western missionary has shifted from pioneer church planter to more of a support role, providing training and mentoring. Increasingly God is raising up the indigenous church to carry the Gospel to unreached and restricted areas of the world.
Losing Our Identity to Help the Indigenous Church
Years ago, WorldServe saw this trend and asked, "How can we, as Westerners, participate in this incredible spiritual harvest and help the indigenous churches around the world without invalidating their leadership, vision and passion?" There was only one answer: We needed to become "worldservants." We believe that God has raised up WorldServe Ministries to bring desperately needed resources and assistance to the indigenous Church.
To avoid imposing Western methodologies, we at WorldServe willingly lose our identity and work within the framework of the indigenous churches.
We are less concerned about who gets credit than that the job gets done. We always start by listening to the local Christian leaders so that we can accurately assess the needs and opportunities in each country.
In order to protect those who may suffer persecution, torture or imprisonment for their faith in Christ, it is essential that we take a behind-the-scenes, anonymous approach to our work.
Maximizing the Effectiveness of Our Work
Some important principles maximize the effectiveness of our work:
| • |
We move quickly and strategically into areas where the Spirit of God is moving.
|
|
|

| • |
We utilize existing distribution networks where possible instead of setting up foreign offices. |
| • |
We work primarily within the church planting movements, where evangelism and discipleship take place in the context of the local church, leading to both explosive and lasting growth. |
| • |
We are constantly looking for creative ways to give assistance. |
| • |
We strive to bless what God is already blessing by supplying needed resources. |
We do not seek to initiate any program of evangelism or church planting on our own. Rather, we wait for God to present these opportunities to us, and then we join hands with the indigenous Church, supply the necessary materials and stand back and watch God work. We desire to give God the credit for any of these great outpourings of the Spirit. No denomination, organization or person can claim to be the agent bringing about the greatest turning to God in history.
